Long ago, a poor fisherman cast his net into the Nile and pulled up not fish, but a sealed copper jar. Curious, he opened it — and out burst a towering Djinn (genie), wrapped in smoke and flame.
The Djinn roared:“For centuries I was trapped in this jar! At first I swore to reward whoever freed me. But as the years passed, anger grew in my heart. Now I promise death to whoever opens my prison!”
The fisherman shook with fear, but he was clever.“My lord Djinn,” he said, “you are surely too large to have ever fit into this tiny jar. I don’t believe you came from it.”
The Djinn, proud and boastful, cried, “I will prove it!” and turned into a thin wisp of smoke that coiled back into the jar.
Quick as lightning, the fisherman sealed it shut again!“You may be mighty, Djinn, but wisdom is stronger than anger,” he said.
He threw the jar back into the Nile, where the waters swallowed it forever.
And so, the tale spread through Egypt: “Power without wisdom destroys itself.”
